Today’s world is all about machines and pneumatic operations Pumps and air compressors are necessities that ensure movement of gases and liquids from one place to another. Absence of pumps and compressors will result in catastrophe as we will be unable to complete even simple and day to day activities like pushing water, blowing up tyres or even pouring gasoline in cars.
Difference Between A Pump And An Air Compressor
Although people tend to use both compressor and pumps in same category but they do have a basic difference. Both of them are machines but a pump moves fluids from one place to another whereas a compressor squeezes gas and pumps it to another place. Thus, compressors work mainly with gases and pumps with both gas and liquids.
Using Air compressor and pumps
Machines that use liquids have pumps inside them for example engines of vehicles need to supply fuel through pumps and a dishwasher has a pump to cycle water. Pumps are generally of two different types.
Rotary pumps moves by help of a spinning wheel that is enclosed in the middle of pipes. Angled blades draw water, spin it at high speed and force it out through outlet pipe in an opposite direction. One common example of such workings is washing machine that works on this principle.
Reciprocating pumps move in an alternative motion of back –and-forth with help of a piston inside a cylinder. When one pulls the handle, air is drawn in and when one pushes it back air is driven inside it. Valves helps in ensuring that air that is drawn in does not go back again. One of its common examples is bicycle pumps.
Some machines do not work by just moving liquids; they have ability to harness stored energy of a compressed fluid. It is a fact that energy is needed for compressing gas, and this energy is neither wasted nor does it vanish, it is simply stored inside compressed gas. One can easily use this energy at a later period by moving the gas elsewhere.

Workings of pumps and air compressor
Air compressors and pumps function on principle that as air compresses, volume decreases and pressure increases. Following are some basic methods to achieve desired results-
Single Piston air compressor– One of the easiest ways to achieve it is by reciprocating piston that includes parts like
- valve head
- connecting rod
Air compressors use either gas or electricity as power, depending on machinery. It also has a tank that helps in storing of compressed air. A valve head is located on top of a compressed cylinder and it includes both outlet and inlet valves. Inside a cylinder when a piston moves downwards an empty void is created.
Now the difference in inside and outside pressure permits opening of inlet valve through atmospheric pressure. Air now enters the place of vacuum and is then compressed by help of piston that is going upwards. As inlet valve shuts down outlet valve opens and compressed air accumulates within the tank.
Dual Piston air compressor– These are commonly used and work on the same principles as Single Piston compressors with help of parts like-
- dual cylinders
- connecting rod

- Oil-lubricated pumps– It is a durable method that involves giving an oil bath to walls and bearings inside a cylinder.
