A sofa bed or sleeper sofa is a type of sofa with a metal frame and a folded mattress. Basically, you find it as a couch in the living room with a hidden bed, but after unfolding the mattress you can use it as a bed.
What is really amazing with a sofa bed is that when you have a small space, then you do not really need to get a bed. Instead, make yourself comfortable with your sleeper sofa bed and maximize the use of your space.
Having a sofa bed at home is a great advantage. You will have a furniture built for multiple purposes. But, what will you do when your sofa bed collapsed or the frame broke? Dumping it is not a good idea, especially, if you still have a remedy. And then, you can even save some money if you can fix it yourself.
How To Fix A Collapsed Sofa Bed
Things You Will Need
For Minor Damages
- Wood Glue
For Huge Damages
- Tape Measure
- Wood Glue
- Staple gun
Steps On How To Get Your Collapsed Sofa Bed fixed
Gluing And Overlay
First, you have to inspect your sofa bed. Can you some cracks or split parts in the joint areas, arms or legs? You can do this by turning the sofa bed in an upside down position. You do not normally see the problems under the sofa bed, so most of the time, you can only notice some minor problems in the visible parts.
You might be thinking about gluing the cracks or splits. That depends on the situation. If the crack is quite small, then using some glue is possible, but use a clamp after. Now, if the cracks are really huge, then you will be needing an overlay of the broken part. This time, glue is not enough to fix this because it can’t hold such damages and then, the sofa bed will collapse again.
For the second step, you have to prepare your tape measure and plywood to get ready for the overlay of the broken area of the sofa bed. Now, get your tape measure and then, use it to get the correct measurement of the sofa bed’s frame. After measuring, you have to cut the plywood with your saw. Make sure to cut the plywood exactly the same with the frame’s measurement. Prepare your glue and then, put it over the damaged area.
Tightening and Replacement
There are sofa beds with metal parts for the convertible mechanism. This can also be a reason for a sofa bed to collapse. What if you lost or damage some of these parts? What will you do?
First, you have to turn the sofa bed in an upside down position. And then, inspect the metal parts. Without these parts, you won’t have an efficient sofa bed. Therefore, it can be damaged or collapsed.
For your next step, check the washers, bolts, and nuts if they are still there. If they are loosened, then simply get a screwdriver and tighten them. But, if you lost those parts, then simply replace them.
Levering And Hammering
If the frame of your sofa bed is bent, then it is another reason for it to collapse.
The first thing that you need to is to inspect the metal frame of the sofa bed. Sometimes because of your weight the metal frame bents. If this happens, then prepare your leverage to bend the metal frame.
And then, use a hammer to fix the bent metal frame. You have to be careful not to hammer braces in the convertible mechanism of the sofa bed.
Replacing The Wooden Beams
If you are experiencing the worst scenario, then do not be worried. Your sofa bed can still survive.
First, you have to remove the mattress or cushion of the sofa bed for inspection of the damaged part. If you can hear the noise, then there is a possibility that the wooden beams are broken, rotten or bowed out. Now, remove or dismantle the broken parts of the sofa bed because you need to replace it.
Next, prepare your tools, such as tape measure, hardwood, wood glue and saw.
And then, get the correct measurement of your wooden beam and cut your plywood with the same dimension.
Now, replace the broken wooden beam with a new one. It would be best to seal the end portion of the plywood with a glue. And then, for a more secured position. You may use thick staple wires or thin nails on it. That would surely eliminate the noise that you can hear from your sofa bed.
Let me remind you that before the inspection, especially if you need to turn the sofa bed upside down. You have to remove the mattress, cushion, upholstery or fabric. So that you can clearly see what went wrong and why your sofa bed collapsed. After fixing it, then you may return back what you have removed.
