Here is the truth:
A dull chainsaw is dangerous. That is because it increases the chances of kickback.
This begs the two question...Why the need to sharpen the chainsaw. Here are the two answers:
- To increase its sharp cutting life span.
- To transform it from slow-cutting into a firewood cutting ninja.
- To save on fuel consumptions
- If you find yourself using too much effort or persuading it to cut, then your chainsaw is dull.
- Inspect the waste material that comes off. A dull chainsaw will ride to the cut while a sharp one will give off chips.
Here is the step by step guide on how to sharpen a chainsaw with an electric sharpener.
Step 1: Understand the specification of the saw blade.
You need to know the details of the blade before trying to sharpen it. You can get all this juicy information from its manual or on the box it came with.
Step 2: Choose the right position for the sharpener.
Place the sharpener on a firm rigid ground to prevent it from moving while you are operating on it. Place in appropriate position where you can install the saw blade with ease.
Step 3: Install the stone on the sharpener.
The stone should fit the gap between the teeth. For your case you need to choose the appropriate width for this to happen. You can find all the info on the manual.
Step 4: Adjust the swivel angle.
The next step is for you place the chainsaw blade on the holder of the sharpener. Then adjust swivel angle from 0 degrees to 60 degrees. You can also adjust the angle further, the 60 degrees is the recommended swivel angle.
Step 5: Adjust the blade teeth angle.
The appropriate angle is given on the manual. That is you need to read the manual to get the specific before starting the process. You adjust the blade of the teeth by loosening the knob of the blade holder.
Step 6: Adjusting the depth.
Depth adjustment prevents the grinder from cutting too deep between the teeth. Failure to adjust the depth, the grinder will cut the metal’s teeth and the saw blades will have damages.
Step 7: Begin the process.
Start the process now, slowly sharpens the sides of blade. After you can finish with one set of tooth, adjust the grinder’s angle and move to the next set of tooth.
For instance, if you started with 30 degrees on the side, change it to negative 30 degrees. You have to follow the same procedure for every set of teeth you will be dealing with.
Things To Remember When Sharpening The chainsaw.
Sharpening a chainsaw with an electric sharpener doesn't come natural to most people. Even veteran like me who are used to sharpening with a file; find it hard to sharpen with an electric chainsaw.
I will have to agree that an electric chainsaw makes the work easier but at the same time if you don't know what you are doing you may spoil the chainsaw without your knowledge.
When it comes to sharpening with a chainsaw, there are two things you need to remember:
Setting The Correct Depth:
If you have been filling your chainsaw with the gauge, you understand how it takes a bit of an art to get the right precision of the depth setting.
That is why when sharpening with an electric sharpener or file; you need to be as accurate as possible. When sharpening with either the electric sharpener or file, you need the following things:
- Setting the depth too low, will make the plane take a small amount of wood and this will reduce the efficiency of your time.
- Setting the depth too high, will make the plane cut too deep into the wood and these results to vibration that lead to increase in the risk of kickback and stress to the chain.
You need to be accurate in the depth setting to prevent the two scenarios from happening. For better results, do check the depth setting after every 3 to 5 minutes to maintain the right precision.
How Often To Sharpen :
The sharpness of the chainsaw is something that diminishes with time. Even when you are not using it will still lose its effectiveness.
For that reason, a little sharpening every day won't hurt. But you need to make sure that you sharpen the chainsaw before you start working on any piece of wood.
